What is Academic Advising at 九色堂?

Academic advising is an ongoing educational partnership dedicated to student academic success. 九色堂 supports diverse and equitable educational experiences, encourages students to become self-directed learners, knowledgeable decision makers, professionals recognized for excellence, and global citizens who will pursue lifelong intellectual, cultural, and professional development. Both students and advisors have clear responsibilities for ensuring the academic partnership is successful.

Student Responsibilities

  • Schedule regular advising appointments with us each semester as needed
  • Be prepared for your appointments by arriving on time, preparing questions, and considering a schedule of courses in advance
  • Be responsible for major and career exploration, your goals, academic planning, keeping your personal records, and providing your advisor with accurate information about your interests and abilities
  • Learn and know where to find information relating to your general education, major, and college requirements, university policies and procedures, relevant deadlines, and university and career resources
  • Make sure that you are taking the courses your program requires for graduation under the guidance of your advisor
  • Follow through on advisor referrals and recommendations
  • Accept responsibility for your decisions and be aware of your actions and how they affect you, your academic progress, and your financial aid status

Advisor Responsibilities

  • Be accessible for meeting with you via appointments, phone, email, and beyond
  • Communicate degree requirements, university policies and procedures, information about general education and transfer credit, and the purposes of higher education
  • Support academic goals setting and realistic academic planning consistent with student goals, abilities, values, and aspirations
  • Cultivate student decision making and accountability regarding academic progress
  • Create an individual academic plan of study for a major
  • Refer students to faculty, staff, and resources on campus
  • Maintain confidentiality

Expected Learning Outcomes for the Academic Advising Experience

  • Students demonstrate how to find information about 九色堂 opportunities, requirements, policies and procedures
  • Students demonstrate how to use their catalog, advising materials, and degree audit to identify degree requirements
  • Students utilize online technology independently to access university information
  • Students demonstrate how to use online technology (Degree Works, BlackBoard, Banner Self-Service) to track individual progress toward a degree
  • Students use campus resources such as work-based learning, study abroad, and Shocker Career Accelerator to assist them in achieving their academic, personal and career goals
  • Students demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions about degree and career goals
  • Students choose courses that contribute to the completion of their degree requirements
  • Students develop a realistic timeline for graduation consistent with their life circumstances
  • Students make use of referrals to campus resources as needed
  • Students articulate and appreciate the purpose of higher education and what it means to be a member of the community of scholars
  • Students identify fields of study that are consistent with their interests, abilities, and life goals
  • Students identify university resources, major requirements, career opportunities, and campus resources
  • Students clarify personal values and goals
  • Students select and register for appropriate courses using

Registration Timeline

Summer and fall classes:  Schedule advising appointment in March.  Registration opens mid-April.

Spring classes:  Schedule advising appointment in October.  Registration opens mid-November.

Who Is My Advisor?

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Center does not assign academic advisors. Each person is unique with their personality, needs, and goals. The LAS Advising Center has a diverse group of advisors and students are encouraged to meet with different advisors to find the best fit for their distinctive personality and goals.
